Environmental contaminants have long been a part of everyday life under the patterns of industrial development. Air, water and ground contamination can harm our health and ecosystems. Federal and state regulations help us to record and better understand the risks that different forms of pollution pose, as well as prioritize locations for remediation. For example, the list of known contaminated sites for the state of New Jersey are routinely updated. Federal agencies track existing and legacy pollution sources. Pollution sources can be associated with point sources, or more widely distributed, as traffic and individual residences contribute to environmental contamination.
