This section explores the registered and eligible historic properties and districts within Madison Borough. By examining these historic properties and districts, we can not only see where important places to the history of Madison are located, we can also gain an insight into what life in Madison may have been like in the past based on the remaining historic properties. From a preservation perspective, mapping historic properties allows us to attempt to preserve places that are possibly in danger of demolition. This way, we can protect and/or reflect upon the town’s rich history and preserve it for generations to come. You can read more about Madison’s historic properties and districts on the Madison Historical Society’s website linked here.

This map displays the historic districts in Madison Borough with a solid border line. The properties are filled polygons, noting where a historic property is located. Madison Borough is home to 125 listed and eligible historic properties and four historic districts. Listed and registered properties are identified by the town as significant properties to both Madison Borough and the state of New Jersey. Eligible and identified properties are also identified in this map (see legend), but it is up to the owner of the property whether or not they wish to register their property as a historic property.

In terms of equity, the State of New Jersey offers a restoration tax exemption. Should the owner of the home have to restore the historic property and not have the funds to restore or renovate the property. More information about the reclamation of historic properties can be found here on the New Jersey Economic Development Authority website. This way, more historic properties can be enjoyed and restored for a longer period of time.
