Tree Canopy/Green Space

The map projected below shows the Tree canopy density within the municipality of Madison, NJ. In addition to the Tree Canopy layer, there is also a Land Use layer present for the municipality, differentiating rural, green space and urban developments. The relationship between tree canopy and green space in Madison, NJ has previously been highlighted. It is clear that tall, dense tree canopies prevail in undeveloped land as forest is the prevailing ecosystem in the Madison, NJ area, with the exception of sporadic grassy marshes and open meadows. Some undeveloped areas with a dense forest canopy are designated as parks, such as Loantaka Brook Reservation, also extending into neighboring Morris and Chatham townships, and Memorial Park. However, the more urban center and developments immediately surrounding the downtown have at least a small concentration of trees and/or green space.; trees are generally visible in any given location with planted specimens throughout the municipality’s urban sidewalks.
